Subject: [CR]Re: symbols and cultural differences

The club/flower thread reminded me of a somewhat similar "OOPS" moment I had in Montreal a few years ago while visiting the Canadian Cancer Society. We were being shown their new computerized community resource directory that they had proudly named "Albatross". This struck me as very funny and weird......then I remembered that being francophones, their cultural association for the albatross was that of a beautiful and luck-bestowing bird that followed sailors back in the days of sailing ships...they had no association with its later English-language meaning in Coleridge's poem where the sailor who shot the albatross was forced to wear it around his neck as a unlucky burden! Luckily they didn't hang one around my neck! Cycling content...Montreal is a wonderful city in which to cycle, eat, and check out the Marinonis...sans albatross! Doug Wagner Richmond,KY
