It being the 'seventies and all, I wondered why they didn't come in "avacado"! OK, Now I'll talk pop culture trendy, the two that come to mind are on topic datewise and in the 'lightweight' cat according to Schwinn and Raleigh, but heavies for us.

I have two mid-fifties 10 speeds from Schwinn and Raleigh. The Continental's decal theme is Knights in armor, swords, and shields. The Raleigh features Rockets (A huge Atlas-like craft long-wise on each fork blade)and other spececraft theme. I remember seeing a live Vanguard missle (same time as Sputnik) in a glass case in the Hecht Co Dept store in DC in '57, and it had returned from OuTeR sPaCe.

I can't remember kids our age being into Knights, but my '57 Bauer (a middleweight with cantilever frame and lighter than my '60 Varsity) did sport a coontail off the seat- a very popular Davy Crocket themed accessory in that time, and we spoprted caps to match.Nothing more macho than going down the block shooting cap pistols from the seat of that 'iron horse' Today it would cause the neighbors to scramble and a possible arrest. Just a few years later a similar accessory hunf from bikes and car antennae .It was a marketing product of the branders of the first popular carbon Fibre frame,, Exxon!
