This sport, perhaps more than any, epitomizes the eternal human drama. In the same era, one man almost literally rises from the dead to win the Tour five times. Another, after himself overcoming great challenges to win the Tour & Giro, seems destined to win them several more times, but somehow, for reasons we don't understand, throws it all away and dies much too young. Perhaps it's the tragedies even more than the triumphs that make this sport so compelling.
