As previously mentioned, I actually have a Mavic derailleur that came with "SIMPLEX" marked pulleys.

I think you're right that certain parts of the components were supplied by outside sources. The raw forgings for the cranks were supplied by SR (Japan) and the hub forgings were obviously source outside of Mavic too.

Campagnolo did the same thing, with the ti parts of their components being supplied by OMAS, afterall.
