I agree with your instinct on this one. The mavic derailleur has always looked to me as an in-house project. It's possible that simplex had some hand in the actual manufacturing of some of the parts, but the design??? no way!

Yes, I talked to Art at all the trade shows over the years. Never thought to ask who made the derailleurs.
The thing that is puzzling to me is that when Galli (Italy) needed derailleurs for their component group in the 1980s they had Simplex rebadge the Simplex derailleur as "GALLI". I'd expect that Mavic would have Simplex do the same for Mavic, instead of Mavic designing their own CNC-style derailleur and having Simplex retool to make that. Also, I have never seen any part Simplex made that looked at all to be CNC-style industrial design like Mavic was known for.
Mavic sold rebadged Look pedals, rebadged Modolo brakes, rebadged Simplex shifters (stamped "SIMPLEX" logo omitted), so why not rebadged Simplex derailleurs?
