As far as I know, 130mm spacing first appeared with 8 speed rear gearing. At the time, most people in the shops I knew, thought this produced extreme dish and probably a weak and unreliable rear wheel with the light rims we were then using. Little did we know there were all those HEAVY rims being introduced that would allow you to make a decent (if heavy) wheel! Mid 80s?
