If it actually is a broomstick, it probably is a porous softwood. Shoot hot air down through the top of the stick with a hairdryer. There may be a wee bit of moisture picked up from the atmosphere in the wood that will evaporate and cause enough shrinkage for the wood to loosen. Since you are in LA though, the wood is probably very dry, unless there has been a lot of rain lately. Shooting some lubricant down along the sides of the stick may help. When you pull, use the twist and pull method, not just pulling. If the fibers start to tear, you lose. If that doesn't work, drilling out the center and knocking it apart, as has been already suggested, seems like the only way. They do make really long drill bits, or with a soft wood, you could probably grind your own boring device out of steel rod.

Don't yank it out and give yourself a black eye!
