Dave preferred Colombus. The Tange and Reynods frames were to take advantage of lighter availabe tubesets. When he had the money he ordered in quanity the Columbus "Dave Moulton" tube mix. This was a sl/sp or slx/spx mix. Chainstays were sp(spx), downtube was sp(spx) on all but the smaller frames. Butted tubes were trimed to match frame size for the proper resonance. In the John Howard, and Fuso limited production frames he had a set formula. The Moulton's were custom and tubes were selected to match the rider's needs.
Dave was very consistant in his approach to frame design. A Moulton criterium frame would have seat and head tube angles increased by a degree (73 t0 74 head with fork offset changed to maintain 6cm of trail) a 1/4" higher bottom bracket, shorter wheelbase and the tubes would err on the stouter side with larger diameter seat stays the norm. I own a half dozen Moulton frames including a rare custom Fuso criterium. I unfortunatly have been cursed as a better criterium racer (prefer track racing). I find the Criterium frame to a tool (Dave worried his Moulton frames were to expensive to race) and my Moulton road frames to be (out of all the bikes I've riden) my favorites. I did however right or wrong counsel Dave that something closer to the criterium design might be more "east coast" in taste.
I was Dave's largest dealer and found him like Mark easy to get along with, great to do business with and a good source for clean jokes. He is quick tempered, pertinacious, and felt unappriciated like many great craftsmen. He has cut all ties with the bike biz except for a couple of us that still exchange emails. T.
