Subject: [CR]Maxi-Car hub bearing fixed

Just a followup on the Maxi-Car hub. I was trying to improve a less than smooth bearing condition in my rear hub (actually, down-right crunchy feeling). Jan Heine described how to remove the axle by bracing the hub in a block of wood with a hole for the freewheel threads and banging on the axle.

My first attempt failed when my banging away with a Snap-on plastic coated dead blow hammer snapped the pine block in two. Next I tried a plywood fixture that held up better to the pounding. The alxe didn't budge. Next, I tried a small sledge hammer. It seemed quite brutal. Lo and behold, after a few slams, the bearing freed up and the alxe spun smooth as butter. No play at all, unlike some Phil Wood's I've had. Mission accomplished.
