I have recently received a little booklet titled 'Manuale del Ciclista' or Cyclist's Manual. It does have any date on it but from reading it, I would guess it to date from the early 1900's. It is great fun to read. To give you more insight into the booklet, The chapter titles are:

Physiology of exercise effects of exercise effects on muscles effects on circulation effects on respiration effects on digestion nervous system effects on secretion effects on nutrition damage from muscular exercise, tiredness stress, tiredness, wear the best tonic for the muscular system a bit of history of the bicycle the choice of machine. The weight and speed the position on a bike saddle, pedals, chaincase, pneumatic tires, brakes...

There are also chapters on women's and men's health, teaching the youth to ride...

It is full of interesting theories and advice. In the chapter about tires, they say that whereas flats of pneumatic tires do tend to cause discomfort and difficulties, their advantages are so great that it is truly the only way to go. They then say that initially pneumatic tires were initially made of up to 60 mm widths and that they are now brought down to the more logical widths of 45, 42, 38 and at times even more narrow widths...
