Hinault was shorter than these other guys - he was no taller than 5'8". I think the success of all these racers was due to the fact that they could time trial well, in addition to being great climbers. That's a big advantage in races like the Tour and the Giro.

It seems like bigger riders have a natural advantage when time trialing, so being tall strikes me as an advantage as long as the rider's weight is on the low side. Best regards, Fred rednor - Arlington, Virginia
