Don't forget that pretty much all pro bikes in the 1930s and '40s used cloth tape to hold the brake cable housing to the top tube (three bands or four even) instead of cable housing clips.
>From the old photos it looks like to me they were using that sticky black stuff we used to call "friction tape," but I'm sure that handlebar tape was used too.
