Despite the great efforts and sincere research attempts by CR members and others, I am forced to remind everyone that direct quotes from famous makers still must be taken with the understanding that there is almost always a healthy dose of hyperbole in these reminisces. At bike shows since the early 1970s, I have talked personally to most of the famous European bike makers, many passed away now, and virtually all "guilded the lily" rather heavily, shamelessly self promoting and grossly exaggerating their own excellence. Rather like a boastful athlete, the bike makers' ego gratification could get a little deep! So, rather than dwell upon sought-after exactitude, it's much better to roll a bit and view their statements as romanticized versions of events and timing and "First ever" innovations....
