John;

I suspected as much... after inspecting my photo collection I see several bikes of similar date with hex nut binders and others with Campy hex socket binders (which I guess must be conversions?). The bolt that came off my bike was a hex nut affair, heavily chromed (and severely bent). However, it has no key and I don't see a key slot in either seat lug ear, though I did not look closely... I'll have to check it out again.

My bolt came with a single thin washer. Instead of trying to track down thicker ones, I think (after confirming I have a correct and not "squished" seat tube diameter) I will proceed to the bench grinder and remove some material from the bolt and sleeve until I get a good fit (before you begin to shudder, be assured that this is a fairly new Campy bolt from the bike shop, not some NOS oldie with an accompanying certificate of authenticity).
