Here's a neat tip for anyone working on lots of bikes. For the last year or so I've been using medical Q tips, I can't recall the technical name, but they are long and have a wood stick. Since they're for cleaning cuts etc. they don't shed some of the cotton, and are much easier to use than paper towels, which was my old method. They do cost a little, but not too much. And, just to be sure to credit thr right person, the idea to use them came from the 15 yr old who helps us out on weeekends.

Don't take out the dustcovers. It's very easy to damage them, and there's no benefit to removing them. You can take a bit of paper towel and curl it in there to clean everything out. You'll need to do it several times but eventually the towel will come out clean. Then regrease and reassemble. No damage to the fragile covers.
