A quick survey of 20 magazines from the 1949 TdF reveal that, for every 100 pics clearly showing bikes with wingnuts, there are about 35 pics showing QRs. The teams which had QRs on their bikes included Italy, Italian Cadets, Belgian Eagles, Centre-Sud-Ouest, Switzerland, and Ile de France. Riders include Coppi, Bartali, Rossello (no relation), Ricci, Tacca, Dupont, Kubler, Magni, Dolhats, DosReis, and Biagioni.

My magazines go as late as the 1952 TdF, and some riders were still using wingnuts that year.

Thanks Aldo,

I enjoy looking at these photos and trying to determine equipment used. I was interested to see in your latest installment that the bike Marinelli is riding has wing nuts and not QRs. Weren't QRs available in 1949?
