I think the British medium-gear time trials might be an interesting thing to revive and expand, as far as using yesterday's technology in today's setting. Limit the riders to a 72-in gear or smaller, preferably fixed. It might be interesting to set some limits, as in no aero bars or specifically aero helmets, steel diamond frame, etc. Try to design it so that it's not a technological arms race. Look at it this way - it would be almost like a citizen's class race. or some such thing.

Alas, for massed start racing, we're probably stuck with what we have now. A couple of years back, there was a discussion on this list about Paris-Tours being run on fixed-gears in 1965 and 1966, apparently in an effort to attract more interest. I suspect that fixed-gear massed start racing will be limited to the fixed-gear class in the Furnace 508 and similar rides.

I would address the Maynard H. quote, but that would mean addressing the issue of Maynard, himself. The language that requires is surely unacceptable in Dale's living room.
