Ann-

You have every right to take a picture of another's bicycle at a public show. I can appreciate your amiability in mollifying this character but this an absurd extention of a property right.

People needing to be identified with their bicycle or trying to control an image you made of their utilitarian object? They need to get a life. We just caretake these things anyway.

I gather someone will be miffed at my opinion and have some argument that their bike as an artwork and they have the right to control reproductions and blah, blah, blah but give me a break

This all changes a bit if the person in fact made the bike and if in fact it is arty to some degree but still- give me a break.

Unless you publish pictures of a certain bicycle wheel without credit- http://www.moma.org/collection/depts/paint_sculpt/blowups/paint_sculpt_020.html in which case a hasty retreat would be in order.
