Subject: [CR]Campy triple cranks on ebay

I have to agree with David Bilenky as I've got a set of OEM triple cranks myself.

I belive that based on the extension of fluting on the spider arms of the drive side, these were drilled for a triple in the factory. At one point I had 3 or 4 Campagnolo cranksets not on bikes and compared everything pretty closely and none of the doubles had the short fluting on the spider arms. I know the non drive side is much newer on the Ebay set and why would Campy send out a warranty arm for a crankset that was never used.

What is really a shame about these cranks on ebay is they are missing the interesting fasteners that connect the granny ring to the crank arm. I took my triple, (awaiting my Claud Butler repaint) out of the parts cabinet to look at it and I'm not entirely sure how to duplicate those fasteners. A standard chainring bolt screws into a internally threaded cylindrical spacer which has an allen fitting in the bottom of it. I'm not too sure I want to try and loosen that spacer to prove this, but it looks as if it is threaded into the spider I suspect one could always find a matching non drive side crank arm, but the little fasteners? Well....?

Steve Neago says: Well folks, Spring has arrived and with it comes yet another ebay seller attempting to deceive the public. http://ebay.com/<blah> The seller claims this Campy NR Strada Triple crankarm set is OEM and this does not appear to be the case. The right crankarm is modified by having holes drilled out , but the drilled-out fluting that identifies it as Campy OEM is not present. The seller claims these crank arms are "brand new", but the right crank arm clearly shows front derailleur rubbing on the back of the crank arm. Even the left crank arm laser etched style does not match the right crank arm.

I just thought I'd give a warning to newer CR members, you have to watch out for the ebay sharks that try to feed in the Spring!

"David Bilenkey" <dbilenkey@sympatico.ca> says in response:

Steve,

Look a little closer. The arms are a mis-matched pair, but I'd bet they are new. The flutes on the spider arms are shorter to allow for the additional inner ring, so it's likely those holes are factory done. And I think you're mistaking a blade of grass for a FD rub on the back of the right arm, enlarge the pic and see. They look pretty pristine to me.

No chicanery, and no I'm not the seller.
