very basically , it was like this ,

Raleigh Competition "first generation" approximately late 1960's Zeus components from EspaƱa ( "Spain" ) Zeus drop-outs in the frame-set David gives excellent list of components , below question - did ALL of those earliest ones have the colorful oval headbadge ?

Raleigh Competition Mark II "second generation" approximately early to middle 1970's T.A. & Huret components from France Huret dropouts in the frame-set lugs were those lovely semi-fancy Raleigh "Exclusive Capella" fully-sloping fork crown the only color choice was - elegant black first frames had "3 main tubes" Reynolds 531 , later frames were entirely Reynolds 531 with double butting where appropriate

Raleigh Competition G.S. "third generation" approximately late 1970's Campagnolo Nuovo Gran Sport group from Italia Campagnolo drop-outs in the frame-set lugs were short-point two color choices - black or metallic silver

Raleigh Competition G.S. "fourth generation" & beyond ! approximately the 1980's SunTour components from Nippon ( "Japan" ) SunTour drop-outs in the frame-set still full Reynolds 531 made in Asia for Raleigh U.S.A.

Later the "Raleigh Competition" morphed into entirely different bicycles , some with steel frames made of "Raleigh 555" tubing and "Raleigh" drop-outs . Some years the only color available was white ? An interesting reversal from the black color that made them famous ! And now they are made with aluminum frames ! The model name is still being used !
