I just received one of the ultra large flange Prior (Atom?) hubs (eBay item 3674727348) You can see that its size is exactly made to allow spoke removal with the attached Regina 3 speed freewheel. That it's the most beautiful hub ever made is a nice side effect.

I once read the recommendation in the biggest german bicycle paper that "real racers" should loosen the spokes before a race and use this additional bit of comfort to pump up the tires a bit harder to get lower rolling resistance. Jan, you probably know who wrote this.
