Mea Culpa! I was indeed speaking of the road championships.

The road world's date from 1927. There were however no Italian pro world champions prior to the advent of the road world's and only one amateur champion in 1926.

With regards to American cycling prowess, it is indeed interesting to take note of other pre 1927 American pro world champions. They were: Banker, Lawson and Kramer. Zimmermann's inaugural wins in 1893 and 1894 actually predate the 1895 date in which the pros began racing for the world's. Other American amateur world champions were Hurley and MacDougall. Americans Nelson, Walthour (sp?) and Wiley also won the paced 100 km events.
