This particular SCAM is called Fishing (but i think it is properly spelled fisching?)

It is called that for the obvious reason. If you click on the "conveniently provided" link you will be directed to one that looks very official where they will attempt to gather info on you that can and will be used for nefarious purposes.

I verified this with Paypal when I got one. Also these scam attempts are used against Ebay, credit cards, etc.
