He was 48. He rode it again at 51. In one of those years (not sure which) he made a solo break of 500 km. http://www.memoire-du-cyclisme.net/palmares/faure_benoit.php

Actually, I find this not so odd,

"Was he a couple of months short of his 50th. birthday? I find this remarkable if this is true."

The first time I did the damn thing I was 26 in 1983 (I'm 46 soon 47 now). In 83 there was a lot of silver hair (if hair was available) and the average age looked like 50 ish and I felt like the youngest fellow there. It seems the event is not a young mans sport as riders over 70 were successful.

At the next running in 2007, I'll be 50 and I hope to have enough skill, tactics and cunning to beat my earlier time on the course. I just hope my experience is up to the challenge.

I seem to remember Hermann De Muncke (sic, Belgium) and Scoot Dickson (USA) who were top finishers for decades to have had their best rides in their late 40's and early 50's.

Studies have shown as speed fades with age, endurance rarely does and older sneaky people have a hidden advantage.

Take a friend cycling, PBP starts again late summer 2007.
