ISo the question is, when was the use of the short fender/mudguard totally abandoned on racing bikes? Also, considering the direction in which a tire rotates, are there _any_ circumstances in which they served a useful purpose? Cheers, Fred Rednor - Arlington, Virginia

"Shorties" are useful in keeping mud, muck and mire off your brakes and also from encrusting the underside of your saddle (this is why Brooks used to sell those composite saddle "undershields"). But they are indeed not much help in keeping the rider dry and tidy. Let alone the chap trying to pass you from behind. Indeed, they do a dandy job of directing a perfect spray of crud.
