I dunno when they started, but in general, chrome disappeared in 1974 due to the "energy crisis."
Chroming uses a LOT of electricity, and that became prohibitively expensive in many areas. This was especially true in Britain, because, if memory serves, there was also a big strike in the coal industry about the same time.
