This Island of ours was named "Great Britain" when the two kingdoms of Scotland and England became one under King Kames IV of Scotland. Wales was added later, as was Northern Ireland. Circa 1800 and to this day, the correct title in full is as stated "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" hence the usual derivatives of UK, United Kingdom, Britain, Great Britain, and Northern Ireland...just to confuse things....! Although more commonly referred to as "Northern Ireland" on it's own, (Britain generally being England, Scotland and Wales) it's not uncommon to see references to "Britain" used to include Northern Ireland, and not in any particularly deceptive way. Worse bastardisations of course do occur, and the least pretty example being Scotland and Wales being referred to as part of "England" - something you'll never hear on any of these fair isles...particularly in the darkest North (anywhere beyond Greater London)...

Great Britain England is part of an island called Great Britain, the largest island in Europe. Great Britain is the official name given to the the two kingdoms of England and Scotland, and the principality of Wales. It also includes the small adjacent islands except the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. Sometimes people use the shorten name Britain instead of Great Britain.
The term "Great Britain" was used for the first time when England and Scotland became a single kingdom under King James VI of Scotland who became King James I of England in 1603.
Great Britain is made up of:
England - The capital is London.
Scotland - The capital is Edinburgh .
Wales - The capital is Cardiff.
United Kingdom Together with the province of Northern Ireland, Great Britain is part of the United Kingdom. The official name of the UK is the "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland." The Uk is a member of the European Union (EU).
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UK) was formed in 1801 and constitutes the greater part of the British Isles. The largest of the islands is Great Britain, which comprises England, Scotland and Wales. The next largest is Ireland, comprising Northern Ireland, which is part of the UK, and, in the south, the Irish Republic.
