charles:

sorry for the quick reply.

SIS compatible derailluers work with non index shifters no problem. The derailleur needs to have enough movement in the parallelogram body to accommodate the cog range, so a brand new 10speed campy or shimano rear derailleur will function perfectly well with a friction shifter to move across a 5 or 6 or 7 speed freewheel. The key is the shifter has to match the freewheel or cassette cogs/spacing. With few exceptions, you can use any derailleur with any shifter within a brand, as long as you keep the in mind the shifter and freewheel/cassette compatibility. If you don't care about the index function then don't worry about it.
