Harvey It is my understanding that oxy-acetylene fusion welding was was commonplace in aircraft construction prior to the introduction of tig welding.

Race car guru Carroll Smith has some good info on gas welding 4130 tubing in one of his books, and I dimly recall that 4130 was original formulated to be gas welded. Even if my memory is faulty, he's worth reading: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-form/104-5999981-2197536
