Marc,

Is the FW in good enough shape to reuse? If not, you can get it off by removing the outer race with a punch (it's left-hand thread), pulling off the outer body with the cogs, sweeping up the bearings, pawls and springs from the floor, and clamping the inner body between the jaws of a vice. Remember to loosen the vice once the body breaks free. You can damage the threads on the hub if you don't.

This is not a good technique to use on a FW that will go back into service, though it typically doesn't mangle the body so bad that it couldn't. However, I have broken perfectly good FW removers on cogs that are just going to be thrown away. Since some removers are really hard to find, I'd rather use the vice trick on a stuck FW that is headed for the scrapheap. It seems that some of our lovely classics have gotten really attached to clusters that have been their constant companions for 20+ years and are really reluctant to let them go.

Now, if I could only get some of my married friends to think like that about their spouses...

Steve Barner, who rode over 80 hard miles on a scorching hot day today on an OT bike with 126 mm spacing and 6-spd FW, to buy his wife a jersey. She loves it. I have heatstroke. I think she likes that, too. Bolton, Vermont
