The common brake fluid in the U.S. is DOT3, I'm not sure what it's called outside the U.S. This stuff is, as someone else mentioned, very bad for paint. It's also very bad for synthetic rubber, The hydraulic seals we used to deal with were Nitrile, Viton, and Urethane. Brake fluid would wreck these in about 24 hrs. Nitrile turns into a foam rubber like substance. The seals in Auto brake systems are natural rubber, and sometimes teflon lined hoses are used. I'm not sure about DOT5, since it's fairly new, and most of the construction guys didn't have any around. DOT3 sure caused a few expensive repairs though.

Now this really makes sense. Brake fluid has to be compatible with at least synthetic rubber seals. Anyone know more? And also what type brake fluid?
