Chrome can be painted over as long as the chrome is stable and it is properly prepared for primer and paint. Care must be taken to make sure there isn't any rust or other problems under the chrome, before one takes to painting.

I am getting a replacement fork of my '83 Casati. The bike is red, and now somewhat faded. I actually have a choice between chrome and red from Phil at R&A in Brooklyn (thanks to Ben Kamen for the tip!). The new red fork will not match the old red frame, but might be passable. Chrome goes with everything. The bike came with a painted fork, and I generally like painted forks better.
Someone just wrote something about chrome forks being weaker and prone to rust. But of course one sees a lot of chrome forks out there.
I am thinking about going for the chrome, then at some later date getting both frame and fork painted.
Question: can chrome forks be painted?
