Subject: [CR]Campagnolo / Campy Hoods - Sources and Reviews

I wrote a review on campy hoods - sources a few months ago. At least 5 types of substitute hoods were available at that time:

If you want world-logo or shield-logo hoods, there are a few scalpers who will charge $75/pair (shield-logo). Velostuf comes to mind. You can find world-logo and shield-logo on ebay, and sometimes the hoods are cheaper with levers attached, and cheaper still with levers & handlebars & stems attached. I bought some nice fresh shield logo hoods for $100 and they came with a bicycle attached. Well, that wasn't the only purpose i had for that bike ...

In my opinion campy hoods wear out fast and were never worth the money. So I evaluated several types in the posting above. My favorite is either the modolo 920 (very campy-like), or the gipiemme natural gum (but after writing the review, i concluded that build quality was not high on gipiemme; i like modolo better.) Many people like Modolo 919 anatomics but these are noticeable from 20 feet away. On vintage rides I've met people using suntour and dia-compe (not 144) but theirs were just as scarce and out of production as campy hoods.

Finally, there was a guy in Los Angeles two years ago who was familiar with rubber casting, and he took a pair of world-logo hoods and began making copies on his own (with identifying marks scratched into them), and selling them on ebay for $50/ea. He got a stern talking-to from Campagnolo, and quit after making fewer than 10 sets, i believe.

Good Luck,
