Subject: [CR]Commuting on Tubulars

I have done a fair amount of commuting (35 miles round trip over reasonably clean roads) in recent years using tubulars. Here are a few of my observations FWIW:

Best Cheap Tubular - Gommitalia Champion, very nice ride, best looking (in a vintage way), average durability. MUCH nicer and more durable than Vittoria Rallys IMHO (my last favorite cheap tubular).

Best Riding Tubular - Veloflex Servio Corsa, really really nice! The Criterium model is nearly as nice and probably more durable. I actually never commuted on these but they are so nice I had to mention them.

Toughest Tubular - Tufo S33's are amazing. I wore the tread down to the cord on several tires without getting a flat! I think that they ride a bit harsher than the Veloflex tires. However, probably the best choice for a commuter.

That being said I currently commute on my Jack Taylor most of the time with 27" clinchers and a pre-slimed tube in the rear! Even with easy to change tubulars, changing a rear tire in the dark in the rain (which seems to be when it often happens) is a task to be avoided.
