Unfortunately so too did Mike Walden who was also a Michigan legend and a real character. I remember him showing me a wrenching maneuver he did to the top tube of a lugged frame near the head tube which he claimed told him whether the builder properly mitered the tubes or not. I also have a memory of him going up to bikes at random lined up at the start of a criterium at Chandler Park in Detroit and trying to rip the front tires off the wheels to see if they were glued on well enough. I recall at least one that didn't get to race that Its sad to realize we won't see the likes of Mike and Gene anymore.
