Mike Kone published an article on this subject in his Vintage Bicycle Racing Newsletter in the early-to-mid-nineties. As I recall, the spade cutout was the area where he pictorially showed the difference between a real Confente and a fake. I don't recall exactly, but it seems to me that the real ones were very precise in the curve of the spade and the flow to the stem.
