I think your local shop needs to re-calibrate their caliper. GB bars are standard British/ISO size, 25.4 mm, a.k.a. 1 inch.
Older Cinelli bars were a proprietary 26.4 mm size. Nominal Italian
"standard" size is 26.0 mm, but many Italian bars/stems are actually
.2 mm smaller, i.e., 25.8 mm.
