In response to Jerry Moos's comments on the various versions of the Competition:

"There was an earlier version of the Competition, 1969, chrome Nervex lugs a la International, oval headbadge, black or forest green. I've seen, touched, and photographed both so I know they were real. "

Many thanks Larry for the added information... it's fascinating but also a bit frustrating that the informational "Black Hole" for Raleigh lightweights is what I (showing my age) consider to be recent history... c. 1966-72. Retro Raleighs has catalogues posted yet none of these machines (early Mark 1 Competitions included) are shown. Did they print separate Carlton works catalogues then?

I have still not found a thing about the Dunelt badged International I mentioned in a previous post that's c. 1969-70 (has a E prefixed serial number).

Things did get a bit confusing at this time precisely when cycle manufacture had changed to building a nice frame set "in house" and then subcontracting out practically everything else out. Then again even when Raleigh made everything but the tyres, there were catalogue spec variations. Just no "mystery bikes".
