Greetings, In reply to Tom's comments about our beloved haggis, he should be careful what you says so close to Rabbie Burns Day. We're a sensitive lot but you know it's what made us great. On a serious topic, I am in search of a set of Chater Lea racing pedals (circa late 40's early 50's). Lost out on 2 Ebay auctions. Sellers were in the UK and I was asleep when the auctions closed ........duh. These are the last pieces I need for my '46 Ernie Clements. Thanks for the help of the group thus far in steering me in the right direction for gears and decals. Alistair Johnston White Rock, BC Canada

Sam,
Try Hi-E. I think they're still out there. If you do end up with a Hi-E rim you will need to invest in an anchor as well; they're lighter than air. As a matter fact, I think I have a complete front wheel somewhere in my pile of junk. I'll look around, if I find it I'll let you know. It's probably 24 or 28 holes, so you will have to pay a weight penelty of that number of spokes, but you know what they say... a bird in the hand gathers no moss; no wait, a rolling stone is worth two in the bush, no that's not it, people who live in glass houses are soon parted, crap, a fool and his money shouldn't throw stones...you know what I mean.

SAM,
NO WORRIES MATE. I have them in silver and your will like the specs. 20 hole, quality rim down under in Australia where because of a quirk in the biosphere and hemisphere's gravity 20 holes are all you need, 285 grams. I also have some appropriate 150 gram tires to fit. It's big but not too big; a whopping= 406 mm. Standard issue to most of the finer Alex Moulton bicycle purchasers= .

While cleaning-up the Stella frame I found a strange tube inside of the seat-tube. The tube is approximately 8" long and located 5" up from the BB and 9" down from seat-post opening. The tubing has a wall thickness of about 1/8" and is made of steel. Its not swaged on the end, just straight tubing so I doubt its a remnant seat-post.
I'm tempted to remove or attempt to dislodge the tube but maybe its there for a purpose. Anyone ever seen or heard of this? I will take it to our local frame-maker tomorrow for his assessment as well.

I've received several inquiries from list members who hear a "rumor" so = I thought I would set out our status again for those who missed my = previous post.
It's true, CyclArt is for sale. I made the decision to sell about two = years ago and have prepared the way for new ownership since.
CyclArt is a team effort. We have always made use of the skills of = several craftspeople working in concert to accomplish the best possible result. Years ago, I hired office people to keep me in the shop. But as the = business grew and assistants matured into self sufficient craftspeople, the shop could hum along without me, and I gravitated back to the office. I like having more time to be with my customers and I especially enjoy the research, design and artwork that go into doing the more obscure restorations and custom bikes. So, now I coach and inspect the work of = my crew, and paint, braze and wrench only when I want to.
I've been operating CyclArt full time since the age of 19 and I suppose = I've reached one of those midlife crisis. I remain passionately interested = in bicycles, especially vintage lightweight, custom and antique bikes, but = I DO have other interests. I have a plan and a vision for another venture, = which has nothing to do with bikes. IF I can pass CyclArt on to new = ownership, I can pursue my new vision. IF this were to happen, all existing staff, = and resources stay with CyclArt, and there would be an extended training = period during which I would pass along all I know to the new owner. I can = provide longer term support on a consulting basis indefinitely as I plan to stay local.
We expect a seamless transition from the customer's point of view. This = is not as daunting as it seems. Most days, the shop could operate just = fine without me. I'm here because I want to be. Further, I've always been a very organized type and the idea of passing the company on has been in = my head from the beginning. That's why it's CyclArt and not Cunningham = Cycle Painting. CyclArt has a written procedures manual, a database of = detailed estimate templates, comprehensive files and libraries. We have our = vintage parts inventory well organized, including an online store. All the = tools are in place for new ownership.
CyclArt has always been structured as a team with overlapping duties. A = new owner could focus on whichever aspect most appeals to them and staff = would cover the rest. It is also possible to take the company in new = directions both within and outside of the bicycle industry. I have ideas for that, = but perhaps someone with a different set of talents could drive the company where I have not been able to.
CyclArt has paid all my bills and supported several families since 1976. The income has never been great, but the satisfaction has been. For = someone with the means to buy it and the talent to fly it, the sky is the limit. I'm ready to provide the maps, the keys and hand over the controls.
We're having a good year and look forward to each day. At present there = are no offers and no timelines. Our broker handles the advertising and screening of prospective buyers. If you are serious about making a = living from fine bicycles, the first step is to call my broker, Lou Chavez at 619-608-9912. If you want vintage bicycle parts, restoration or custom paint, call me at 760-599-1015 or email me off list. Our website of = course is: http://www.cyclart.com

I know that most of you are aware of the scams which have been used by fraudulent Ebay sellers registered in Indonesia and the far East. = Beware. Auctions tend to be = short (3/5 Days max) and in Euros. Once the bidding is over he can ask = for money and then if you send it, needless to say he disappears from = the planet. In one case I found an Italian seller claiming he had bikes which were = available in London, whose descriptions and pictures had been lifted = straight off a bona-fide collector's website in the US! So don't get = your mouth watering over that unique Cinelli or Colnago until you've = checked it out. If in doubt, do what I did and put the description into = Google - It turned up with the exact match on the other site. Check your = sellers out - if they have the bike, then they should be able to give = you serial nos etc. Ask for a picture of another angle. If the seller says he's in the UK, get a phone number and ask one of us Brits to check = it out. DON'T THINK YOU ARE SMARTER THAN THEY ARE. These sellers can be = very plausible, especially when they think that you might just wire them = a few thousand dollars.
Ebay is slow to get off the mark in these cases - I reported a dozen or = so of these sellers (probably the same guy) and by the time they checked = it out, the sellers had gone. Recently one seller has been caught for = fraud as he put too much information on his Ebay registration, but on = the whole its anonymous.

Just a short note that the VBQ web site now has color photos of most bikes that have been featured in the pages of Vintage Bicycle Quarterly. You find them under "Image Archives." This page will be updated with each new issue. Also new are a few other photos on the "Sample Articles..." page, including the first single-wire Campagnolo Gran Sport derailleur.
I just wish those bikes and parts were mine!

To complete the saga..
I had posted in December that I had not received any items or response to my emails to the source.
Thursday nite when I arrived home there was a package from Carsten.
In the package: a Campagnolo leather saddle with pump, two NOS flat skewers, two short dropout screw sets, NOS Old Record BB cup set, 86SS120 NOS axle, Campy toe clip pair, pair of Campy NOS toe clip straps, NIB Campy 2-clamp 26.6mm seat post (mint), variour Campy bolts, clamps, skewer nuts, and more small items.
My estimate that there is at least $200 - 275 value in the box.
I am very happy but sad that the "Feedback" on the bid ran out by one day so no way to respond in ebay..

This hub was probably intended for the Hi-E siamese spokes. What are those you ask? Each spoke is twice the normal length, threaded at both ends and folded over at the hub flange. Made of aluminium and aero shaped to boot so you need lots of em. The result is an effective 40 spokes for use with a 40 hole Hi-E rim.
I gave Larry Black a set of these wheels for the Hi-E Cosmopolitan in the museum. The rear has the siamese spokes (18) on the non-drive side, light steel spokes on the drive side and the requisite 52 hole rim. Lightest wheelset I've ever seen (can flip bike if not properly anchored, see Bayliss post), not many were made and few have survived.
Probably the best answer to use the hub is a sturdy 40 hole rim spoked every other hole.
