Hey Ann ,
Just my small contribution to correct use of odd old terms . . . I think there are subtle , but real , differences between the terms ; Box Lining , Pin Striping , Outlining . But maybe I'm wrong !
I'm thinking "box lining" means something specific , that traditional pattern of overlapping rectangles , seen most often on bicycles from the U.K .
Outlining is fairly obvious . These would be stripes which follow a curve , or curves , or complex shapes .
Pin stripes were straight lines running parallel to the longer dimension of the object they were on , mostly , originally .
But then , "pin stripes" are also those incredibly complex , ornate , almost floral , designs on custom "chopper" motorbikes from the 1960's and 1970's . The ancestors of those designs can be seen on early automobiles from before the First World War , and on factory stock Schwinn bicycles from the 1950's !
( on the machine-made , machine-welded , Schwinns used decals for the "pin-striping" - the real pin-striping done by hand was saved for the hand-made frames )
Anyway , I'll send you a couple of photos I have of nice box-lining on frames from the U.K .
For box-lining , the first name which leaps to mind is Jack Taylor . But I do have this lovely Bates frame-set . . .
