Unfortunately, I marked it up, albeit below what would usually be exposed. If there is a way of fully inserting a stem without leaving a mark, I've never discovered it. I use plenty of grease, but it's still hard not to make some sort of mark. The slightly longer extension SR stem actually worked well, so I'm OK for this bike. And since the original stem was SR (although a different model), I'm a little closer to original. I'll either cut the Technomic or maybe trade it to some CR member. Odd thing that no one has mentioned the problem with Technomics in short frames before, at least I don't recall such a posting. This would seem to negate much of the advantage of the wide selection of extensions, which I believe go down to 5 cm. I mean, if someone needs a 5 cm or even 6 cm stem, he/she is probably short enough that the frame will be less than 56 cm and the Technomic will probably bottom out. So the Technomic Deluxe is probably a better bet for short extensions. Oh well, at least the Technomic is not a super expensive stem, so the cost of having learned the lesson wasn't that high.

I ordered a 6 cm Technomic from Peter White, which arrived in only a couple of days. But when I installed it, I found that the bottom end of the extra long quill bottomed out on the fork crown,

Sounds like Peter White is selling defective stems again!

JUST KIDDING!

The stem, as Phil pointed out, is hitting the butted bottom of the steerer tube. All steerers are thicker at the bottom than at the top, since there's more stress at the bottom. The butted section is always about the same length. It's the non butted section that varies in length with frame height. So, shorter frames restrict how far a stem can be inserted. The smaller the frame, the less you can insert a stem.

You have a few options. If the stem is still in pristine condition, I'll take it back. You can also shorten the stem, as described by another poster.

You can also try the Technomic Deluxe, which is shorter than the Technomic. We have those too.
