List,
I just received a Picchio Special that I purchased on eBay from California. The previous owner didn't have any idea of the history behind the bike, just that it used to be his dad's.
Well, I just opened the box from FedEx today. Unfortunately, the bike is in somewhat rough shape. Poor maintenance in the past, poor pack job with little padding, etc.
Anyway, I pretty sure that the bike dates to the mid to late 70's from the over the BB routing, Picchio on only 1 seat stay cap, no braze-on for FD, 1 set of WB bosses, etc.
Upon inspection of the frame, I was checking the rear dropouts since they are usually Picchio branded and I noticed the clearly embossed initials of RdV. It is in a scripted font not straight font and these were not the initials of the previous owner. It seems like I've seen this type of font before but can't recall where. The font appears to have been made at the same time as the Picchio and not a later add-on.
Well, you know who came to mind right off the bat-Mr. Paris-Roubaix. Does any listmember know of any connection between Picchio and Roger?
This is my 4th Picchio and the first time I've seen anything but Picchio on the dropouts.
Thanks, Rick Robbins Ada, OH (soon to be Gainesville, FL)
