Well, a question for all, though maybe the framebuilders on the list might chime in especially:

I have several bikes, most of which I have stripped down to frame and forks, usually with paint, sometimes without)at some time in the past. When rapped, some of them have a pronounced bell-like quality.....the vibrations are very audible, and go on for a long time. Some are more muffled. Is there a correlation between how the clearer frames ride well (with verve, spring, snap, insert nice adjective), or is it all in my head......and is there a physical reason for this?
