For those who didn't take French in high school or university Albert Camus was, in the 50's, the leading light of the "existentialist" school of literature. His most famous novel was L'Etranger, whose English title was The Stranger. One hopes this is still on the world literature reading list in American high schools, but perhaps that is too much to hope. Not sure of the classic content, but plenty of Francophile content.
