You mentioned adjustment of hubs today and if ground bearing races were better than lathe turned bearing races,I would say that ground and polished would be slightly better.I was building a bicycle frame years ago and came across an interesting finding, that is that when I put a pair of dropouts onto an axle and tightened the quick release against them the axle which I thought was adjusted became considerably tighter.I then adjusted the hub to turn smoothly when the quick release was tightened against the dropouts, thus similating the wheel on the bike.By the way I am new to the list,my name is Dave Jenson,I am 47,I grew up in Palo Alto,CA.I am a machinist and have buillt about seven bike frames over the years.I have an early 70s Alex Singer that I am repainting.I also have a miyata 1000 touring bike that I am not sure if it is as old as 1983,either way it is one of the nicest rides ever,I look forward to contributing to the list,Dave.
