It depends a little on the rear hub. The older, wide flange spacing hubs
(usually marked FB) were originally intended for a 3 speed block and I'm certain
"upgrading" to a 4 speed was a period modification, so a four speed block
should be ok. The later narrow flange spaced hubs (usually marked Campagnolo) will
work with up to a 5 speed block. The Paris Roubaix changers were routinely 5
speed and continued to be used into the Gran Sport era in races such as...Paris
Roubaix! They were more reliable than derailleurs when there was a lot of mud
and cobblestones around.
