Good way to look at it. I too often look at the value of bikes based on the "market value" not the relative value. In my opinion, a super record equipped 80s Derosa Professional is slightly over the market at $1000 (without including shipping). But, when people ask me "of all the bikes you've owned and ridden, what was the best riding bike", I invariably mention the mid-80s Derosa Professional I rode for a couple of years. I recall that it cut corners like a hot knife through butter. If a person buys the bike with the intent to keep it a long time and actually ride it, then $1000 is much cheaper than the bike cost when new & it is a better bike by far over what you can get today for $1000.
