Hmmm... at the risk of going off topic, I believe Amtrak no longer offers uncrated bicycle carriage on their trains. The "Vermonter" used to offer a baggage car with cycle racks which was great for the Northeast Corridor, but that was taken off last summer.
Otherwise, they insist the bike be boxed and it can only be carried on trains with checked baggage service.
Hence, as with so much else in this country, one is confronted with the "Why do you just drive?" response that just gets me off on my bike every time.
No criticism of the Cirque implied; it's just a big country and getting around sans moteur is vraiment difficile.
Maybe by the time the 2005 Cirque with a Roll Britannia theme comes around, Amtrak will have relented. Of course it may be gone by then too!
