It is curious how the TI takeover gets overlooked frequently while at the same time Raleigh gets blamed for killing off the English bike industry. I'm happy just to find Raleighs "Made in England" and don't worry about pre or post TI takeover. Though a pre-Raleigh Carlton wouldn't hurt my feelings.

Thanks Pete... and I simply cannot fathom why TI Raleigh could ever be accused of anything but ensuring the survival of the British cycle industry! If anything TI management of Raleigh was too distant; in the scheme of things, they were small potatoes.

Anyone here know anything about Elswick-Hopper?? They and Dawes were the last remaining true independents post 1962. I think Elswick-Hooper were gone by c. 1966. They should be of interest to this group since they specialised in very high quality lightweight bicycles. They were also one of the pioneering British export companies of such machines to the USA post-war.. one of their early "celebrity" customers was the young actor Jose Ferrer.

Oh, I wouldn't be offended by a pre-Raleigh Carlton either... honest! Even with the chromy stickers. And I love their racing jerseys, too.
