Steven, Thanks for the info. I always associated these posts with French bicycles and some strange looking designs. Then again, I wouldn't have been aware of this sort of thing until the mid '60s. Is this a straight post with a separate clamp? One reason the French pieces I've seen had such unusual designs is that they incorporated an integrated clamp like a moderm post. So one way or another they had to accomodate the clamp and the bolt for the expander. But a straight pillar without an integral clamp would be normal for the '40s and a much simpler design.
